2017 Class Schedule

Information:

Dear Students,

Welcome to another fun, creative, painterly year. This year we will begin by refreshing our watercolor and gouache skills and techniques, helpful for returning students and beginners. Then we will gather up our brushes and learn how to paint birds, their feathers, wings, and then their delicate architectural masterpieces of fine grasses, rootlets, plant fibers, thistle down, feathers, flower stems, mosses, and lichen, filling their nests with smooth, glossy, or speckled eggs.

We’ll paint leaves with insects and butterflies; study the fine orchid paintings by the English orchid grower and collector, John Day (1824-1888) and Corlelius Durham (1820-1860); study the art of Margaret Mee and Marilena Pistoia; we will also be inspired by the art of Albrecht Durer (1471-1528). We’ll learn how to expertly paint reflective surfaces like metal, glass, and copper. We’ll also learn how to paint rusted metal or iron surfaces. Then learn the art of Trompe L’oeil so we can fool everyone’s eye, including our own.

Our brushes and paints will then take us back into time when one of the most celebrated painters of the eighteenth century, Jan van Huysum (Dutch, 1682-1749) meticulously rendered bouquets of flowers and fruit. We’ll study his work by recreating a small portion from his painting, ‘Fruit Piece’, 1722. We’ll continue painting natural subjects throughout the year, learning as we go to master techniques, persevering despite failures while consuming sheets of paper and quantities of paint, to become satisfied artists, while enjoying this journey we’re on.

Gift certificates for classes or private classes are available. Contact me for more details.

PAINTING SMALL ANIMAL SKULLS AND BONES ON BLACK OR TINTED PAPER IN WATERCOLOR & GOUACHE

DUTCH MASTER CLASS IN WATERCOLOR & GOUACHE

For this 3-day Dutch master class we will study the art of Jan van Huysum (1682-1749). The work of Huysum epitomizes the rich flower and fruit painting tradition of the Netherlands. We will then paint a portion from his painting, ‘Fruit Piece’, 1722. Although this was painted in oil, we will be painting it in gouache. The portion will include peaches with leaves, muskmelon, harebells, purplish plum, pomegranate portion, crisp mallow foliage, and yellow meadow ants. I will have this image transferred onto a hot press Arches board for you to begin your painting. By painting from this piece we will experience the way Huysum devised a complex system of illumination by casting forms into clear relief, which created a powerful sense of reality. Huysum used insects to create liveliness and to ‘fool the eye’. This class is for more experienced painters, and not for beginners. Bring all your supplies. I’m providing the board. Make sure you have plenty of Winsor & Newton Permanent White gouache. Cost for class: $250. Lunch is included.

PAINTING DRY BOTANICALS & SEED PODS IN WATERCOLOR & GOUACHE

Seed-pods of plants should be given just as careful attention to detail as the rest of the plant. Drying plant stems with spiraling tendrils, dry folded leaves, and interesting seed receptacles can make a lovely illustration, especially on black paper. The twists and turns of dried citrus leaves make for a good exercise in learning how to create 3-dimension and form. You’ll learn how to shadow and highlight for this exercise. If you have a magnifying glass for discerning the forms of some of the tiny seeds and smaller pods, bring it to class. Bring your Arches Hot Press watercolor block or board. Bring all your art supplies. Make sure you have plenty of Winsor & Newton White gouache. I’ll supply black or tinted boards. Cost for class: $160. Lunch is included.

STUDYING THE ART OF MARGARET MEE

We’ll be studying the art of Margaret Mee (1909-1988), then paint from one of her illustrations. Margaret Mee was a remarkable woman, surviving 15 arduous trips to the Amazon, usually with only local Indian guides. Hers was one of the first warning voices decrying the destruction of the rainforest. Some of the flowers she painted have not been seen again. Their habitat has been destroyed by the relentless advance of slash-and-burn farming, logging, and gold mining. She discovered a number of previously unknown species, of which four are named after her, and she brought back hundreds of valuable plants, which were then cultivated in the Rio Botanical Gardens or by the landscape architect, Roberto Burle Marx. Mee’s watercolor and gouache paintings are gorgeous. I was lucky enough to see an exhibit of her work at the Academy of Science in the early 90’s. We’ll be painting her illustration of ‘Nymphaea Ampla’, which is a study of large leaves with flowers in watercolor and gouache. I will be supplying your board. Bring all your supplies. Cost for class: $160. Lunch is included.

PAINTING A MINIATURE ILLUMINATED LETTER IN THE STYLE OF THE ARTIST HOEFNAGEL (1542-1601) IN WATERCOLOR & GOUACHE

Hoefnagel took pre-existing scripts and formulated witty and often satirical figural response to it. “His illuminations consist of a diverse assemblage of natural objects united by their small size. Most prominent among these objects are flowers. His illuminations present a world of flowers, insects, fruit, small animals, and other forms of natural minutiae.” We will be using a letter from an antique alphabet, then illuminate it in the style of Hoefnagel.
